Derby day disappointment

Boro’ saw their run in the Hampshire Senior Cup end yesterday after a 2-1 defeat to Basingstoke Town.
Boro’ came into this match-up with some confidence after beating Frome Town 3-2 last Saturday but Basingstoke were also victorious against Wimborne Town by beating them 3-2 also.
The game kicked off and the first piece of action came in the 9th minute. Basingstoke were awarded a corner, and from the resulting corner, Callum Bunting’s header was cleared off the line by Boro’.
Basingstoke had another chance in the 21st minute when a cross into the Boro’ box was missed by Boro’s Jerry Puemo, and the ball fell to Basingstoke captain Ben Wright inside the box, however, his shot was just wide of the post.
Jim Orvis had a good opportunity to open the scoring in the 25th minute for Basingstoke. When his run was spotted down the wing; he cut inside and his curling effort from the edge of the box was just wide of the Boro’ goal.
Wright had another chance to break the deadlock for Basingstoke in the 31st minute when he was found inside the Boro’ box, he turned a defender and had a shot on goal, but James Stroud was there to deny him with a good save.
Seven minutes later, Stroud was called into action again. After Boro’ couldn’t clear the ball away, Stroud made a brilliant double save to keep the score level.
In the 44th minute, Boro’ opened the scoring. Boro’ were awarded a free kick about 35 yards away from the Basingstoke goal. Declan Appau took the free kick and his effort was deflected, which went over Basingstoke keeper Colm McAdden and into the net to break the deadlock. Basingstoke Town 0-1 Farnborough.
However, the lead was short lived, as three minutes later, Basingstoke were back level. Boro’ couldn’t clear their lines and Wright found Sam Smart inside the box, who striked it past Stroud to take the game all square into half time. Basingstoke Town 1-1 Farnborough.
HALF-TIME: Basingstoke Town 1-1 Farnborough
The second half began and Basingstoke took the lead in the 46th minute when substitute George Bennett’s header inside the box went past everyone but Bunting, who nudged it in to give Basingstoke the lead. Basingstoke Town 2-1 Farnborough.
Two minutes later, Basingstoke had another chance to score when Smart was played through on goal, but his effort inside the Boro’ box was saved by Stroud.
In the 54th minute, Basingstoke hit the woodwork. Dan Collier hit the ball cleanly from about 30 yards away and his effort came off the post of the Boro’ goal.
Seven minutes later, Boro’ had the ball in the Basingstoke net, but the goal was disallowed for offside.
In the 64th minute, Basingstoke had a good chance to make it three. Jack McKnight drove into the Boro’ box and unleashed a powerful strike that came off the crossbar and the follow up for the home team was over the Boro’ goal.
Three minutes later, Basingstoke hit the woodwork again. Wright found himself with a lot of space on the edge of the Boro’ box where he took his shot, but his effort came off the inside of the post and out.
In the 75th minute, the score remained 2-1 to Basingstoke and Boro’ were looking to get an equaliser in the final 15 minutes.
Michael Fernandes had a good opportunity for Boro’ in the 78th minute when the Basingstoke defenders backed off and allowed him into the box, but he fired well over the goal.
Basingstoke had an opportunity late on in the 90th minute when Zidan Akers speeded down the wing after beating a Boro’ defender and found Smart in the box, who evaded a tackle and shot on target, but Stroud got low to prevent the goal.

Boro’ saw further cup disappointment after being knocked out of the FA Cup last week.
