Farnborough Manager, Spencer Day gives the following Squad update…

“In goal we have signed Luke Cairney who is the Army No1. With Zaki [Oualah] signing a pro deal in Algeria I immediately went after Luke who has glowing references. He confirmed his desire to play for Boro starting at Havant & Waterlooville. Sadly for Zaki his deal fell through and although I had committed to Luke, I did speak to Zaki who confirmed that as much as he was willing to return he wouldn’t sign any contract and more importantly was still looking for a move abroad or full time pro deal immediately. This clearly wouldn’t work for us as in a specialist position, we couldn’t consider a player than couldn’t commit back to us. We have nothing but praise for Zaki and wish him the very best in getting the move he seeks; however in Luke we have an outstanding keeper who will be backed up by Aiden Upward, as well as another trialist in Liam Stone who has played for me before.

“In defence we can confirm that CJ Fearn has signed his contract to add to the signings of Josh Huggins, Ethan Allen, Jack Smith, Nick Hutchings and John Oyenuga (who may or may not leave for the USA in January 2018). Another very high quality centre-half who played most of the Conference South campaign is due to join us in the next couple of weeks having recovered from long term injury.

“Sadly Curtis [Osano] informed us weeks ago that he doesn’t have the time commitment in order to play football this season with his new career and upcoming wedding and we wish him well.

“The midfield squad consists of Cards, Keith Emmerson and Jack Barton that previously signed and with two additions of Matt Bunyan and Kieron Forbes.

“Matt, who his head of Sport at Salesian College in Farnborough which will bring another great school link up, has plied his trade mainly at Camberley where his track record has been impressive and he previously shared a goal scoring partnership of over 60 goals in one season with Perry Coles.

“Kieran Forbes is a headline signing that we have worked hard to get over the line. Kieran was part of Maidenhead’s team that won the Conference South last season and played for our neighbours Aldershot as well as being an England C international – I’m delighted to get a player of such quality that shows our hunger to continue the momentum we built up last season.

“Up front we have Perry, Connor Calcutt and are delighted to announce that we have this afternoon agreed terms with St Albans for the return of Jamie Cureton on a one year deal. Personal terms have been agreed and Jamie will sign his contract before tomorrows tournament. Jamie needs no introduction and I’m grateful to Ian Allison at St Albans that has assisted us in bringing Jamie back to the Boro. Coxy is still with us contrary to the rumour mill and will be in the starting team tomorrow.

“With five Pre-Season games still to go, three in four days starting this weekend, I am still looking over three or four trialists of which one or two may be offered deals. With some players unavailable there will be plenty of game time on offer these next few games, chances to try different formations and partnerships as I finalise what is an extremely strong squad. We also will look at our new Academy recruits that had a excellent win at Sutton United earlier this week.

“I can also announce the club has agreed a formal partnership with the Army to have complete training facilities at the Aldershot Barracks. A full size grass pitch, a 5 aside astro and huge gym are already being put to good use and we are delighted and grateful to everyone involved in another positive step forwards.

“It’s always hard in Pre-Season for players and management alike and having retained a good amount of last seasons promotion squad that already have many games behind them I was willing to wait for the right high quality players to make us stronger rather than look at a huge revolving door of trialists that nearly always don’t make the grade and destabilise training.

“The club has learnt its lessons of years ago and we just don’t have the funds to compete with most clubs at this level so have to wait in turn to pick up the players we seek and put our case that Boro is a great place to come and play football. I put a decent squad out at Havant and look forward to the inaugural O’Neills Invitation Cup this weekend as we continue to build towards Aug 12th. I’m sure this update will get you all even more excited for another enjoyable season.”
