The weekend-long O’Neills Invitation Cup kicks off today with Farnborough first up and entertaining Hartley Wintney at The Rushmoor Community Stadium.

Farnborough

It’s been a busy week for Boro’ boss Spencer Day who has been working tirelessly to secure the signatures of numerous players – most notably, goalkeeper Luke Cairney and experienced trio Kieron Forbes, Matt Bunyan and Jamie Cureton.

With a couple of Farnborough players unavailable this weekend, four players from Marc Wardley’s Academy side will be dratted into the squad in addition to Captain, Ethan Allen.

Ahead of inaugural O’Neills Invitation Cup, Manager Spencer Day told Boro View: “A special welcome to everybody involved from Basingstoke Town, Fleet Town and Hartley Wintney.

“Last season we entered a similar tournament at Hendon and it was a vital part of pre-season. It’s hard of course with two games in two days and we will use a lot of players but with two weeks until the league campaign begins it’s great for fitness and to look over players.

“So enjoy the tournament, it’s great that local teams have come together. The results won’t matter after the games but I’m sure there will be some competitive stuff during the 90 minutes as local bragging rights are on offer!”

Farnborough from: Luke Cairney (gk), Ethan Allen, John Oyenuga, Josh Huggins, Jack Smith, CJ Fearn, Nick Hutchings, Jack Barton, Matt Bunyan, Kieron Forbes, Keith Emmerson, Nic Ciardini, Perry Coles, Connor Calcutt, Pat Cox, Jamie Cureton, Josh Ayodele (A), Brandon Hay (A), Reece Watmore (A) and Elijah Nizar Anyan (A).

Hartley Wintney

The Row are managed by Dan Brownlie and Anthony Millerick and will compete in the re-titled Evo-Stik South East League after winning the Combined Counties League Premier Division last Season.

Hartley Wintney finished last Season on 111 points and 18 clear of runners up Westfield but have lost the services of defender Shane Hollamby (Basingstoke Town) and forward Ross Cook (Fleet Town) during Pre-Season.

Speaking to Boro View ahead of this weekend, Joint-Manager Dan Brownlie said: “Millers and I have been working hard over pre-season and made a number of acquisitions that we believe will strengthen our squad.

“Whilst results at this stage are relatively immaterial, they are a good indicator as to where about’s we are; it’s also good to get into the winning habit.

“We are looking forward to the ‘Hampshire El-Clasico’ tournament! I’m sure it will be a great celebration of high quality football within the local area and become a well attended annual event.

“Big thanks to Farnborough and their sponsors for putting it on. Enjoy the games.”
