End of Season Statement and Summary from the Chairman, Simon Gardener
Well, where do I start? A season of achievements both on and off the pitch, starting and maintaining a good position in the table, low moments with break-ins and damage to the club and then the ultimate prize, promotion following our Play-Off Final win in front of our fantastic supporters on Monday 1st May against Barton Rovers. A roller coaster of a season you might say, but what’s new there!
A year ago Farnborough Football Club joined the Evo-Stik League and was placed in the Southern Division One Central. This meant new challenges ahead for us as a club, personally for me, the players, the coaching and management staff, the match day staff and you as supporters if we were to push for promotion and put the disappointment of relegation behind us.
I’m personally pleased for our First Team Manager Spencer Day, who over the past few years has come into criticism during our financial restrictions but has now proved his real worth with the realistic budget he was given. Using his contacts Spencer has assembled a strong squad capable of competing at a higher level. Every player committed 100% to the club and the desire to win promotion for Farnborough FC was seen week in week out. The players and Assistant Manager Jon Reed have formed a tight bond and this only got stronger as the season went on. I will enjoy looking back over the video highlights of the games taken by Lee Carpenter at FCVideo and all the brilliant action photos taken by Don Blandford over the course of the season. Off the field we have had some incredible commercial work from our owner Rob Prince, which has meant the club is now debt free, self sustaining and on a sure footing for a positive future. I’d like to offer a huge thanks to Spencer, Rob, our media team and every single player involved!
The club felt it was important to work as one and as a result we were delighted to forge closer relations with FaST (Farnborough Supporters Trust). Together we worked hard to ensure that many jobs around The Rushmoor Community Stadium were completed throughout the season. FaST also oversaw the Boost the Boro Scheme as well as raising funds after a number of acts of vandalism carried out around the ground. FaST, you are outstanding in your efforts to support the club and every single donation from fans and visitors big or small has been massively appreciated. You more than played your part in our successful season – Thank you.
Farnborough welcomed Knights Training Academy to the club as Official Sponsors this season, sponsoring the club kit along with overseeing our growing Academy, of which a number of players were involved in the First Team squad during the season. Knights also helped by supplying stewards when required on match days, which has also been greatly appreciated.
The club would also take this opportunity to thank a host of companies that also played a big part throughout the season with sponsoring match days, advertising and promoting Farnborough Football Club. Michael Usher Wills & Estate Planning, O’Neills, Green King, RM Carpets, Lumax Construction, MEW Electrical, Grandma Buggins, Smartisan, The Wheel Specialist – Farnborough, Shuretech, Nick Martin’s Driving School, The Classic Barn Company, MSD Grab Hire, A-Line Taxis, Thatcham Butchers and FAFS Fire Systems. Sponsorship is key to the success of any club and we thank you all for helping us to achieve our goal of promotion this season.
To our volunteers, outstanding, unbelievable and fantastic are just a few words to describe just what you mean to the club. As many of you know there are three volunteers that over the last few years I have had the pleasure of working alongside: Kevin Dyer – Vice Chairman, Phil Martin – Club Director and Jim Hardy – Club Director. They have worked tirelessly day and night carrying out much needed jobs that go unnoticed by many, but not by the club. Together we are working as a team to ensure the club continues to improve and grow in the right direction on and off the pitch. As Club Chairman I receive lots of positive comments about the way the club is being run but I am quick to point out that it’s a team effort. Kevin Dyer, Phil Martin, and Jim Hardy, without your help and support it wouldn’t be possible – Thank you.
This season the club has been working on a number of schemes on match days such as free Burger & Chips when a drink is purchased and free entry to any member of the Armed Forces. Farnborough Football Club will continue to look at ways to encourage fans through the turnstiles and involve and work with the local community groups including schools, charities and companies. A huge thanks goes to all of our match day staff from the car park, turnstiles, safety stewards and club shop right through to the hospitality, event organisers, catering, bar and the lounge. You are loyal and a pleasure to work with.
Now to you the Supporters, often a thankless task supporting your local club isn’t it? This season we have seen our incredible, fantastic and loyal supporters become the 12th man on the pitch both home and away and push us on to the final day when we celebrated with promotion. I’ve not seen scenes like that in a long time and joining in the celebrations at the final whistle with you was amazing! Thank you for your continuous support this season as we rebuild from the bottom and strive forward to get Farnborough Football Club back to winning ways. Come on you Yellows, P.R.E Boys and the 18 Yarders, I’m looking forward to 2017/18 already! We will be putting our Pre-Season fixtures on the website in the coming months so look out for them and come and support us again. Also, Season Ticket sales will be announced over the coming weeks.
I know I haven’t mentioned you all by name but my thanks go to each and every person involved with the club. Have a great summer!
