This Saturday, Farnborough return to The Rushmoor Community Stadium for a Pre-Season Friendly against Ryman Premier outfit, Merstham.

Farnborough

Spencer Day’s side started Pre-Season last week with a double header Away at Sandhurst Town – with a team consisting mostly of trialists drawing the first game 3-3 last Saturday, while a stronger First Team won 5-1 on Monday evening.

In Monday’s victory, Josh Huggins marked his return to the Club with a brace, with new striker Eddie Smith, a second half trialist and an own goal completing the scoring.

Speaking to GetHampshire this week, Manager Spencer Day admitted that fitness levels must improve: “We’ve only been back a week but we expect a little bit more from them. We did clearly tire and we’ve pointed that out to them.

“This could be a bit of a wake-up call in the second week of July when we still have the best part of a month before the Season starts.

“We are a small squad this year but we are a very settled squad. That makes it a lot easier than in previous Seasons, no question, but though we played some good stuff and scored some good goals tonight, there are still a lot of things we’ve got to work on.”

Over the two games, current Academy players Jamal Batchilly, Jordan Goater, Jack Hellewell and Captain, Ethan Allen were given the chance to impress, with Josh Francis also making a return.

Academy Manager, Marc Wardley added: “The lads did really well, they impressed and hopefully we will see more of them in the next coming weeks.”

Merstham

Surrey Senior Cup holders 2015-2016, Merstham are the first of two visitors to The Rushmoor Community Stadium for Farnborough’s Pre-Season schedule.

Boro’ know The Moatsiders well, with the two sides having met twice in the Ryman Premier last Season and also have ex Boro’ winger Arron Hopkinson in their ranks.

Merstham won 3-0 at Farnborough in January courtesy of goals from Fabio Saraiva (2) & Charlie Penny and the return fixture at The Moatside finished in a 1-1 draw.

Despite loosing sharpshooters Fabio Saraiva and last Season’s top scorer Charlie Penny to Woking, Manager Hayden Bird has certainly filled the void by bringing in a number of high-quality players over the break.

Experienced goalkeeper Phil Wilson, Dean McDonald (both Dulwich Hamlet), Xavier Vidal (Welling United), Pat Cox (Staines Town) and former Farnborough man Dan Bennett (Kingstonian) have all joined The Moatsiders.

Merstham won their opening Pre-Season Friendly 4-1 Away to Carshalton Athletic lasr Monday evening, courtesy of goals from  Anton Douglas, Pat Cox (Penalty), Alex Addai and Calum Willock.
