Farnborough claimed a 4-2 victory against Sandhurst Town at Bottom Meadow in the opening pre-season game for both sides.

Farnborough from: Lewis Ferrell (Capt), Paul Rodgers, Darryl Siaw, CJ Fearn, Ollie Treacher, Joe Benjamin, Joe Taylor, Unamed Trialists X12.

No Sandhurst Town team available.

Farnborough dominated the early stages and created an early chance when Joe Taylor dispossessed a Sandhurst defender before cutting in from the right and shooting low to the Sandhurst keepers left to force a simple save.

Farnborough then came close to opening the scoring 15 minutes in when skipper Ferrell fed the ball into the path of Rodgers whose early cross from wide right found Joe Taylor at the back post but the young forward had his powerful first time side foot was well tipped over bar for corner by the Sandhurst keeper.                                                                                              Forward Joe Taylor

Four minutes later, it was the unlucky Taylor who once again found himself in the right place at the right time but his shot from an extremely tight angle deflected off the outside of the post for a goal kick after good work on the right from strike-partner Benjamin.

Sandhurst Town 0-1 Farnborough: But Boro ‘kept at it’ and opened the scoring in the 22nd minute when a ball was lobbed into path of trialist Matt Ball and the midfielders shot deflected over the onrushing goalkeeper before bouncing into the net for The Yellows first goal of pre-season.

Sandhurst Town 1-1 Farnborough: But two minutes later it was all square as Sandhurst’s number 9 poked home from close range after Farnborough failed to clear their lines from a corner.

Sandhurst Town 2-1 Farnborough: Now playing with confidence, Sandhurst took the lead on 40 minutes when The Fizzers’ number 3 dribbled his way into the Farnborough box before firing into the roof of the net.

A Boro trialist came close to levelling on the stroke of half time but his long range drive was palmed away by the busy Sandhurst keeper for what was Boro’s fourth corner of the half but the hosts remained ahead at the break.

HALF TIME: Sandhurst Town 2-1 Farnborough

Sandhurst Town 2-2 Farnborough: The visitors made a host of changes at half time and Farnborough responded to their set-back by making it 2-2 on 55 minutes when a low cross from the left from a Boro trialist was suddenly diverted towards the Sandhurst net by a defender and the ball bounced in off of the unfortunate Sandhurst keeper.

In the 68th minute Sandhurst’s number 16 saw his header well held by the Farnborough trialling goalkeeper after the Referee adjudged second-half sub Siaw to conceed a free kick on the right.

Farnborough went down the other end but a good move couldn’t be capped off with a goal as the unlucky Taylor saw his close-range back-post volley incredibly turned away by home keeper following a clever knock down from left.

The home keeper was starting to redeem himself when he denied a trialist as another long range strike from midfield was turned behind for a corner.

Sandhurst Town 2-3 Farnborough: A comical second mistake gave Farnborough the lead for the second time in the game as the Sandhurst keeper rolled the ball out to his right back who in turn whacked it back over the keepers head, leaving him stranded.

Opening goalscorer Matt Ball came close to adding a fourth when the midfielders venomous strike – which was creeping in – was magnificently tipped over bar for yet another corner.

Sandhurst’s last opportunity of the game came minutes before the end but the impressive Farnborough goalkeeper claimed the ball in the goalmouth to deny any chance of an equaliser .

Sandhurst Town 2-4 Farnborough: With almost the last kick of the game, Matt Ball made certain of the win with an outstanding strike from outside of the box with the home keeper beaten.

FULL TIME: Sandhurst Town 2-4 Farnborough

So Farnborough start pre-season 2014 with a win – next up for The Yellows is the visit of Michael Appleton’s Oxford United next Saturday 12 July (2pm kick off).
