Resurgent Boro’ “Leather” the Tanners.
Last night’s hastily arranged friendly against Ryman Premier League opposition, was an opportunity for the few travelling fans to witness the latest changes to the Boro’ squad ahead of Saturday’s home game against Gosport Borough.
The latest newcomers, Louie Theophanous (Staines Town), Harry Grant (Bromley) and Lloyd Foot (Eastbourne Borough), joined the more familiar faces and the lineup was completed by a trialist in the number 2 berth.
Wearing their new, all white away strip, Boro’ started at a good pace and a Phil Page free kick after 5 minutes rebounded from the wall to Dan Bennett whose pass found a colleague in an offside position.
However, 10 minutes later, following some good approach work, Harry Grant slotted an inch perfect pass through to Louie Theophanous and the big striker made no mistake in opening his account in a Boro’ shirt. Leatherhead 0-1 Farnborough.
The early lead lasted nearly 2 minutes, then Ashley West conceded a penalty in diving at the feet of a Leatherhead forward. Vas Karragiannis, coolly slotted home the penalty to bring the scores level again. Leatherhead 1 – 1 Farnborough.
The home side had their moments and West did well to save one particularly nasty swerving shot and preserve the status quo. Around the half hour mark Boro’ were forced to replace the trialist at number 2 when he appeared to sustain a cut to his head/face. No. 12 took his place.
Boro’ were enjoying the greater share of possession and Bennett’s persistence in the box ended with a strong shot into the side netting.
Following a left side corner Lloyd Foot returned the ball across the box where Phil Page eagerly and acrobatically smashed home the second goal for Boro’ after 37 minutes. Leatherhead 1-2 Farnborough.
No more than two minutes passed before Dan Bennett pounced at close range to rattle in the third in off the underside of the crossbar. Leatherhead 1-3 Farnborough.
Boro’ were rampant and just before the break, CJ Fearn met a good cross from Theophanous, but his shot was too high.
Half Time: Leatherhead 1-3 Farnborough
Boro’ made a like-for-like substitution at half time with Dan Pearse replacing CJ Fearn in midfield.
The second half saw the momentum continue from both sides and following a right side corner, West made a good diving save.
Theophanous latched on to a ball across the box and only a good block by the home keeper from close range stopped him adding to his tally.
Boro’ replaced Page with a trialist on 62 minutes and a double substitution and shortly afterwards,Theophanous and Bennett made way for Okenabirhie and a further trialist.
In the space of little more than a minute, with less than 20 left on the clock, Boro’ killed the game off when Lloyd Foot, scored two of his own around 74 minutes to put the game well beyond the home teams reach. Leatherhead 1-5 Farnborough.
Following a strong challenge near the corner flag by sub 19, the Referee requested that he was replaced and so, the sub was subbed. I’ve never seen this happen before and can only think it was because the status of the game, being a friendly, meant he saw little point in sending him off.
The remaining 10 minutes or so, produced chances at both ends which resulted in good saves by both keepers, before the home side got a consolation goal in the final minute when a strong shot from Karragiannis was deflected into the goal off a Boro’ defender.
Full Time: Leatherhead 2-5 Farnborough
A very pleasing result from a business like performance with the goals being shared between the new kids on the block, Theophanous with one and Foot with two as well as one each from the more familiar duo of Page and Bennett.
Saturday can’t come quick enough. Without the usual team sheet, or programme (and not even a Burger bar open), my thanks to Jamie and Neil Bunker, Garry Ward and Garbo for helping to identify some of the less familiar players.
Chris Cook (Snr) assisted on one occasion, but merely to suggest CJ had been subbed about half an hour after he had left the pitch!!! Maybe a trip to Specsavers, Chris. Dave Workman knows the address. Lol.
