‘Boro’s Youth team secured a home tie against the winner of tonights match between Thame United and Christchurch courtesy of a 2-1 victory against Hartley Wintney.
‘Boro went in one up at half with an Ebenezer Isiakpona strike, and only the woodwork thwarted the home side extending the lead.
With only a few minutes on the clock Hartley Wintney drew level, a well worked move through midfield and a slick finish made it look like the tie was heading to extra time, minutes later though ‘Boro scored the decisive goal, Ryan Powell driving down the left wing and his drilled cross ricocheted of the unfortunate defender into the net.
The visitors very nearly took the game to extra time when good delivery from a free kick was met by the forward only for his header to find the crossbar.
Academy Director Allan Smart said after the game ” Sometimes you are better being lucky than good, yes we are in the next round, but I have just told the boys that they are better than the performance tonight, and with the first team gaffer in the stand they should have needed no more motivation to put in a performance.”
The victory follows the 2-0 home win in the Football Conferece Youth Alliance yesterday over Three Bridges.
Bee Itkerd and Sanjay Baniya either side of half time the ‘Boro scorers.
