‘Boro fell to their second defeat in Essex in a week, as the new manager syndrome came into play as it often does, Chelmsford City securing their first league win since mid October under the guidance of new manager Mark Hawkes.

‘Boro started brightly and in the opening  first five minutes; Scott Donnelly worked Chelmsford keeper Pentney with a free-kick from fully 25-yards.

Not to be undone Kevin Scriven pulled off a fine save from Ward, but just minutes later found himself picking the ball out of the back of the net.

‘Boro were guilty of not clearing their lines, and when the ball fell to impressive full back Sam Long, he drilled home from distance.

Scriven had to be on his toes as he repelled further attacks and on 37 minutes, ‘Boro pulled level, loanee Harry Lee latching onto a half clearance and scoring from distance

‘Boro though failed to take the game in level at the break, substitute Bertie Brayley teeing up Joe Ward who made no mistake from 8 yards.

A half time change came with Elvis Hammond making way for Dan Bennett and Adam Doyle almost levelled things early in the second period, getting onto the end of Donnelly’s free kick, but saw his header marginally miss the target.

Academy player Courtney Fearn fresh from his debut as a sub against Concord Rangers in midweek, made his first start for the club, and gave a good account of himself at right back, but almost handed the hosts a third as he spooned a clearance, but where he could have gone to pieces, he kept calm, taking a good position behind Scriven and atoned for the error by heading a clearance off the line.

It was left to the experienced Brayley to secure victory for Chelmsford, slotting home after good work from substitute St Aimie.

So ‘Boro once again left Essex empty handed, and with Aldershot Town drawing with Weston-Super-Mare in the FA Trophy meaning Tuesday nights Hampshire Senior Cup match being postponed, Spencer Day has seven days to rally the troops before the club travel to high flying Bromley.
