After Tuesdays disappointing defeat and early exit from the FA Cup the home side made changes to their first team squad with both Merrick James-Lewis & Tyrone Berry being released from the club and young and exciting Tom McGarry being loaned out to play games.
With the visitors attacking hard in the first twenty minutes, Whitehawk had the first clear chance in this heated encounter when Sam Gargan looked to have headed a Michael Boateng cross into the top corner but Kevin Scriven had other ideas and somehow palmed the ball away and out for a corner.
On 26 minutes and slightly against the run of play Farnborough took the lead through Reece Connolly. Phil Page controlled a clearance by Scriven and picked out Connolly 25 yards out from goal and the striker unleashed an unstoppable low shot passed Jamie Young. Both teams battled for every ball and with Steve Laidler in your side the tough tackling midfielder will scrap away for every ball and more than matched the visitors fight today.
Just after the restart of the second half Whitehawk defender Lewis Taylor was given a second yellow card for a clear handball, much to the disappointment of the player and his team mates the ref stood firm and the red card was shown. There was a determined steel about the Boro defence today and with the experience pairing of Alan Inns & Adam Doyle who put their bodies on the line today with last minute blocks and tough tackling. Doyle in my opinion must have gone close to winning man of the match with Inns coming a close second.
Farnborough killed the game off on 81 minutes when Phil Page headed a Scott Donnelly corner into the net with the help of a big deflection of Tom Cadmore who in his attempt to clear the ball headed home Pages effort.
This was a much better performance than Tuesday’s game against Eastbourne, and Farnborough travel to the East Sussex club for the second time in 10 days on Tuesday as the two clubs play the rearranged fixture from the start of the season.
