The team with the best home record of this season so far, Farnborough, faced the team with the best away record Hayes & Yeading United at Paddy Power Park.
With only 12 minutes on the clock Boro took the lead with a well worked set play, Scott Donnelly drove over a corner and Josh Huggins out jumped former team mate Dean Inman and with a bullet of a header found the top corner. On 32 minutes the home team’s players and bench were left baffled and frustrated when Reece Connelly seemed to be clearly wrestled to the ground in the box, the forward picked himself up and in an attempt to regain the ball and was fouled for the second time just outside the box. The whistle was blown and much to the disbelief of everyone a free kick was awarded for the second challenge and not the first challenge which happened in the box.
Elvis Hammond thought he had doubled the lead just after the restart linking well with Donnelly but the striker’s effort hit the side netting. Hayes and Yeading’s captain Dean Inman then went close to levelling up the score when the young player’s header cannoned off the cross bar from a corner. Phil Page fired a low shot just passed the right post as the home side looked for the elusive second goal but sadly it never came and it turned out very costly.
On 79 minutes the visitors went all out in search of the equalizer and with a slice of luck and the help of a big deflection a harmless effort by Louie Soares found the net. This goal gave the visitors a spring in their feet and at the same time knocked the wind out of a tired looking Farnborough team today. Then in the third minute of extra time Hayes was gifted the chance to win the game from the spot when a tame miss timed tackle by Lloyd Macklin was judged to be a worthy penalty. Jack Mills made no mistake from the spot and turned 1 point into 3 points and keep their 100% away record intact.
After the game Farnborough’s Number Two Leigh Dynan said: “There were a number of key decisions today that seemed to favour the visitors. Consistency is a word used endless times in today’s game, on reflection and after seeing the highlights the first foul on Reece was in the box and it was a clear penalty. With that being said we had chances to kill of Hayes when we were one up but let’s give them credit they kept going to the final whistle and got their bit of luck as a reward.”
